Mawlana Fazel Rahman, leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, has criticized Pakistan’s trade closures with Afghanistan, saying the policy has failed and instead pushed Afghanistan to expand trade through Central Asia and Iran. Speaking at a press conference, he noted that Pakistan has effectively cut itself off from trade with both the East and West while official data shows trade with Afghanistan has dropped by around 60% in recent months.

The message which was labeled “Draft…” looked suspiciously like it had been awkwardly copy pasted. After all, it is highly unlikely for a communications staff member to refer to their boss as “Pakistan’s PM” in an internal draft.

The Contact Commission Afghan Public Figures has announced that since its establishment, 1,315 former officials and prominent Afghan figures from the previous government have returned to Afghanistan. This includes former high-ranking officials, politicians and other influential figures who had either fled or remained abroad following the IEA's rise to power in August 2021. The commission, tasked with fostering dialogue and reconciliation, has worked to facilitate the return of these individuals to the country, signaling a potential shift in Afghanistan’s political landscape.

For several days, talks have been underway in Urumqi, China, between Afghanistan and Pakistan, mediated and hosted by China. Pakistani media have published some details, reporting that the Pakistani delegation made three key demands to the Afghan delegation, which are considered the core stance of Pakistan’s negotiating team. According to sources, Pakistan has requested that the TTP be officially recognized as a terrorist group, that their hideouts be destructed and that concrete evidence of actions taken against the group be presented. China, through its mediation, is pushing for both sides to adopt a five-point joint working framework to resolve the issue.

Central Asian governments have cautiously welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the US-‘Israel’ and Iran, seeing it as a necessary pause in a conflict that has already impacted regional stability, trade and energy chains. While expressing support for the ceasefire, officials across the region have emphasized the need for urgent negotiations.
